Managing Your Federal Student Loans

Who is NSLP?

NSLP is a nonprofit national student loan guaranty agency in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program. Through the FFEL program, the Federal Government provided insurance against losses to encourage lenders to make student loans. The insurance on these loans is handled by guaranty agencies that perform outreach to educate borrowers on repayment options and borrower rights and responsibilities under the FFEL program.

NSLP is not a collection agency or telemarketer. Our trained counselors guide students through their repayment options and help bring your federal student loan account up to date–and keep it that way.

Why We May Contact You

We may reach out to assist you in understanding your student loan repayment options, rights and responsibilities, along with resources for staying out of delinquency and default. Ultimately, we want to guide you towards successful student loan repayment. We want to be your H.E.R.O when dealing with your student loans. Our motto is “Helping Educate Responsible Repayment Options”, and we provide each borrower guidance and understanding through respect and dedication.

Cancellation / Discharge / Forgiveness of Loans

  • Student Loan Forgiveness
We encourage you to go directly to the Federal Student Aid website, and FAQ page, for the most up-to-date information or contact your servicer.

    • Commercially-Held Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL)
The Department is working with FFEL lenders to ensure that commercially-held federal student loan borrowers can also benefit from cancellation without having to consolidate into the Direct Loan program. FFEL borrowers do NOT need to do anything now while the Department pursues this solution. In the meantime, borrowers with commercially-held FFEL loans may choose to consolidate into the Direct Loan program to become eligible for relief. Before you make this decision, we encourage you to learn more about loan consolidation at: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/consolidation.

  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
The PSLF program was created to encourage more graduates to take full-time public service jobs. It offers FULL tax-free forgiveness on the remaining balance after 120 qualifying on-time payments while being employed full-time in an eligible public service job.

A temporary, limited PSLF waiver is in effect until October 31, 2022 allowing borrowers to receive credit for past periods of payment made under any repayment plan and for nearly any Federal loan type – including FFEL and Perkins loans. Learn More
