Repayment Assistance: Teacher Loan Forgiveness

How to qualify

Loan Forgiveness for Teachers
If you teach elementary or secondary school and meet the following requirements, you may be eligible for Stafford Loan forgiveness.

1. You must have taught full-time for five complete, consecutive qualifying years at an eligible Title I school (as determined by the U.S. Department of Education).
2. You must be a new borrower of Stafford loans as of October 1, 1998.
3. If your loan is in default, you must have made satisfactory repayment arrangements with your loan holder.

The Am I Eligible for Teacher Loan Forgiveness brochure provides a list of additional requirements and explains how you may qualify. This brochure is available in English and Spanish. You may download the application and forbearance forms and view a list of low-income schools eligible for Stafford loan cancellation. You can check the status of your Stafford loans through NSLDS
