NSLP Default
Rate Drops to 1.4%--
December 3,
2002
For the third consecutive
year, NSLP's annual default rate ("trigger" rate) is
below 2%, lower than many student loan guarantee agencies in the
country. In addition, NSLP's most recent FFELP cohort default
rate of 5% is below the national average of 5.9%. The
steadily declining default rates are the result of strong default
prevention practices.

Train Schools and Lenders on New Regulations--

NSLP recently completed the
first of a series of training sessions for schools and lenders on
newly-issued Federal Family Education Loan Program regulations,
which affect a broad range of student loan program
requirements. NSLP is the first in the nation to offer this
training, which was completed within a week after the new
regulations were published.

will present information that shows why college access and
persistence are a problem for kids in America today. Academic
Access-Why America's Kids Can't Go to (or Stay in) College

Present at National Default Prevention Day--

NSLP will present the latest student loan default prevention
strategies at the Department of Education's second annual
National Default Prevention Day on August 1. The one-day
workshop includes presentations by NSLP and other guarantors,
schools, and ED at 12 locations across the country and in Puerto
Rico. NSLP will present strategies for early intervention, cohort
default rate reduction, partnership, and media relations and
provide schools with effective delinquency and default prevention
tools to help keep student loan defaults from rising.

NSLP Saves
Student Loan Borrowers an Estimated $9 Million--

NSLP will continue to waive the one percent guarantee fee that is
charged to students and parents who borrow Stafford and PLUS loans.
Borrowers will save an estimated $9 million in loan fees that will
now be available to help them pay their college expenses over the
next year. The cost savings for borrowers is the result of
declining student loan defaults.

Borrowers Rehabilitate Defaulted Loans--

Nearly 1,200 borrowers who defaulted on their student loans are no
longer in default. NSLP's successful student loan rehabilitation
program returned nearly $10 million in defaulted student loans to
good standing over the last year and a half. In addition to
assisting defaulted borrowers rehabilitate their loans, NSLP helps
delinquent borrowers get back on track repaying their student loans
before they default by counseling them about deferments,
forbearances, flexible repayment options, and loan
consolidation.

CommonLine Release 5 in the Federal Family Education Loan
Program. The new version continues to provide schools and service
providers with the flexibility to choose which CommonLine
processes are implemented and facilitates the use of electronic
signatures that allow students to complete and sign loan
applications online. The latest version of
ELITETM, NSLP's electronic loan
processing software, has been enhanced to include new
CommonLine changes.
